The Last Griffinby ~toujin

Back in 2008 I got stuck a terrible rut where nothing I put on paper worked. At the time, no matter what medium I used my ideas remained stale, my lines predictable and boringly SAFE. I think it was my darkest hour as an artist to date, and it lasted for a long long time. I had been drawing a lot of mythical creatures back then- your usual dragons and griffins with a phoenix here and there- and those wore safe subjects; creatures that didn't need proper perspective or anatomy or anything that required research or work.
Once I realized that they were fast becoming my crutch, I vowed to never draw another such creature again.

I've since broken that promise because I can't say no to commissioners wanting a dragon or a phoenix, but this truly was my last griffin. It's also one of three, with a dragon and a phoenix in the same style to follow.
